- Thomas Duff designed the main body of Dundalk Cathedral by basing it on Kings College Chapel in Cambridge, something particularly noticeable from the north front of the church.
- In constructing the first phase of the church over a 12 year period starting in 1842, Duff used the same local Newry granite as he had employed for his cathedral in Newry with the budget totaling £25,000.
- Adding to Duff's design was G.C. Ashlin who penned the northern cathedral tower which also draws from English Gothic - in this case Gloucester Cathedral - at a cost of £6,000 in 1903, whilst the interior is based on Exeter Cathedral.
- During the total duration of construction from 1842 to 1937, a total of £47,496, not adjusting for inflation, was spent building the cathedral, as well as modeling its interior.
