Wembley Park Tower Also known as Metropolitan Tower

Other Information

  • The tower design was the result of a competition that solicited 68 designs. Two of the notable ones had engineering by Gustave Eiffel, and Sir Benjamin Baker who had designed the Forth Road Bridge and Blackpool Tower. The design by Baker was intended to best the Eiffel Tower in Paris and show his rival who was really boss.
  • The original design was for an eight legged tower and an octagonal footprint to maximise the views, but this was reduced to four legs to cut the cost. This reduced the weight distribution of the tower on the ground and caused it to sink.
  • Accessed by four lifts, or staircases in the legs, the first stage of the tower was to stand 61 metres above ground level and contain 2,000 square metres of space within. This would include a 90 bedroom hotel, and a 20 metre tall grand hall with a concrete and steel structure.
  • The second stage of the tower was to be reached by three lifts and to contain a further hall with 1,000 square metres of space.
  • Construction got as far as the first stage but thanks to poor surveying of the ground, the tower began to sink and became unsafe having reached a height of 50 metres.
  • Demolition went from 1904-1907 and is now the site of Wembley Stadium.
  • An underground line was built to serve the anticipated massive visitor numbers, but after the tower demolition went nowhere. The name of the line does however retain the official title of the tower and is called the Metropolitan Line.
